Mike Shenton started out as a qualified petrol and diesel mechanic when he was 19 which led to working on Formula 3 racing cars. Showing a great aptitude for engineering and a unique ability for problem solving, he also spent several years working on a uranium mine in South West Africa.
In the late 70's Mike joined the merchant navy for a few years of which the end marked a completely new chapter of his life. In 1982 he started crafting jewelry which sparked a creative career that would prove to be his true passion. Around this time Mike also started working as a fashion designer for various companies before deciding to move out on his own. Green Market Square in Cape Town, South Africa was the conduit, selling a vast collection of homemade jewelry and clothing; a very innovative business at the time that Mike was at the forefront of.
When he moved to England in the late 80’s he started to dabble with painting as a creative output. Eventually he set up a costume jewelry manufacturing company, crafting all the jewelry himself. Mike then moved on to working for a company that produced pottery, he was responsible for making the moulds of the pottery and also the engineering aspects of the crafts.
Feeling an urge to develop, he then went to study a degree in computer science at Plymouth Uni. It was here, in his final year, that he would hear about what would become his new market.When he heard about the benefits of selling art online he decided to pursue this.
This started a career in making and selling original art online. At the start the art was hand painted but, using his computer know-how, it branched into digitally created art. Eventually Mike also introduced 'spin art', an original idea which was influenced by a technique he remembered from the local fair where he would make ink paintings as a child. The business was extended further into aspects of interior design and furniture making. Mike used the skills he had gathered over the years to make mirrors, artwork and metal work that for local night clubs.
Mike loves making the digital landscapes and seascapes, his influences coming from the beautiful scenery he was once surrounded with in South Africa. Although he is passionate about making the digital art, Mike is also hoping start exploring back into the hand painted aspect of his art. Being a fearless artist urges him to experiment and develop both old and new techniques, constantly creating new, fresh art.
